Vice President Dick Cheney will deliver a keynote address at the ceremony at the Korean War Veterans Memorial. Park Seh-jik, chairman of the Korea Veterans Association, and Lee Tae-sik, Seoul's ambassador to Washington, will attend from the South Korean side, Yonhap reported. The ceremony marks the 53rd anniversary of the armistice signed at the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War that left the Korean Peninsula divided between the South and the North. Participation by Cheney, known to be a hardliner on North Korea policy, follows Pyongyang's missile tests earlier this month and the U.N. Security Council's resolution condemning them. U.S. President George W. Bush visited the Korean War memorial to mark the 50th anniversary of the armistice in 2003. -------------------------------------------------------------------------                   Choo Hits 1st Career Homer    Outfielder Choo Shin-soo of the Cleveland Indians hit his first Major League career home run against his former team Seattle Mariners, helping with his new team’s 1-0 victory on Friday. The 24-year-old Korean right fielder, traded Wednesday from the Mariners, had a solo shot off Felix Hernandez in the sixth inning. Choo also drew two walks before recording the homer. He was struck out in the eighth. Hitting the home run, his batting average rose to .154 from .091. In Saturday’s game against the Mariners, in the seventh inning with bases loaded, Choo was called in as a pinch hitter but fouled out to left field. The Indians lost to the Mariners 3-1. -------------------------------------------------------------------------     Roh to spend his summer vacation at Blue House President Roh Moo-hyun will take a summer vacation next week from Monday to Friday, the Blue House spokesman Jung Tae-ho, said yesterday. "Mr. Roh will be staying mostly at his residence, without special plans to leave the Blue House," Mr. Jung said. Mr. Roh's summer break follows the rout of his governing Uri Party in the legislative by-election on Wednesday and a scandal surrounding one of his deputy prime ministers. During his break, Mr. Roh is expected "to deliberate on the policies of the administration and draft his commemoration message for the August 15 Liberation Day," Mr. Jung added. Liberation Day celebrates the end of Japan's colonial rule over Korea from 1910 to 1945. As current relations between Korea and Japan are strained over a series of issues, observers await with anticipation what message Mr. Roh will deliver in his speech.
